Super Eagles goalkeepers: Who replaces Uzoho against Sierra Leone?

Which of these Super Eagles stoppers could step in to replace suspended Francis Uzoho against the Leone Stars?

Nigeria are facing a goalkeeping crisis ahead of their next Africa Cup of Nations qualifier—against Sierra Leone in June—with nominal No. 1 Francis Uzoho suspended ahead of the showpiece.

Already, keeper is a position of weakness for the Super Eagles, but Jose Peseiro does have options available to him as he looks to secure Nigeria’s progression to the Ivory Coast.

Here are eleven potential candidates to replace Uzoho against the Leone Stars…who would you choose between the sticks?

The Rivers United man was named in Nigeria’s latest squad, and insisted he hadn’t just joined the camp to make up the numbers.

He ultimately didn’t unseat Uzoho, but will he get his chance against Sierra Leone?

John Noble

Named in the squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Noble has struggled to get a look in since, with the Enyimba man apparently adamant that a dispute with the NFF over bonuses is the reason why he’s being overlooked.

Based on merits, should he be included?

Maduka Okoye

Okoye probably would still be Nigeria’s number one—despite his high-profile error at the Africa Cup of Nations—had it not been for his move to Watford.

Stuck on the Hornets’ bench, he hasn’t made a league outing all season, and has been summarily dropped by the Super Eagles.

Sebastian Osigwe

The Switzerland-based stopper received his maiden call-up to the national side in October 2020, but has got precious little recognition since.

At 29, he’s in his prime, is it time for him to finally make his international debut?

Amas Obasogie

Peseiro called two local stoppers into the national side for the Guinea-Bissau double-header, but Obasogie was surprisingly overlooked.

His consistency in recent years has been admirable, not least for Bendel Insurance this term, and he could well be the pick of the NPFL stoppers this term.

Leye Adeleye

The Israel-based stopper was surprisingly overlooked from Peseiro’s selection for the Guinea-Bissau double-header, despite his magnificent form for Hapoel Jerusalem this season.

Ex-Nigeria midfielder John Ogu has called for his promotion, calling him Nigeria’s ‘baddest’ goalkeeper!
