MCCARTHY APPEARS TO LOSE ON 12TH BALLOT BUT DO FLIPS SOME HOLDOUTS

The vote for U.S. House, Kevin McCarthy appears to lose on 12th ballot but flips some holdouts.

McCarthy has continued to negotiate with the hardline Republicans who’ve derailed his bid, proposing concessions in his push to get more votes. Democrats have remained united behind Hakeem Jeffries, who has gotten more votes than McCarthy on each ballot but remains short of the needed threshold.

A nominee needs 218 votes, but the number required could change if members withhold their votes. The House can’t kick off the new Congress or swear in new members until a speaker is elected.
