High Court halts order of conviction against EFCC chairman

High Court of the federal capital territory set aside contempt proceedings and orders of conviction against the EFCC chairman.

About 48 hours after a high court sitting in Abuja convicted the Chairman of the Economics and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), a high court of the Federal Capital Territory has now set aside the contempt proceedings and halted the orders of conviction against Abdulrasheed Bawa.

The court ruled that the EFCC boss was not in contempt of the court as he has released the Respondent’s Range Rover and had initiated the agency’s internal mechanism to ensure the payment of the sum of N40,000,000 to the Respondent.

The application was brought under Section 6(6) (a) and Section 36(1) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, as well as Section 91 of the Sheriffs and Civil Process Act, Cap S6 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004 and other relevant enactments.
