Appeal Court grants ASUU conditional leave to appeal NIC ruling

The court of appeal sitting in Abuja has granted the academic staff union of the university conditional leave to appeal the ruling of the national industrial court on 21st September, ordering the lecturers to go back to the classroom.

Justice Hamma Barka who lead the three-man panel granted leave on the condition that ASUU obeys the order of the interlocutory injunction by the lower court immediately.

A member of the panel Justice Abraham George will also order that the leave granted can only stand if ASUU obeys the orders of the interlocutory injunction of the lower court.

The counsel to the FG speaking to newsmen shortly after the judge said that the honorable court granted them a conditional leave to appeal provided they must obey the order of the National Industrial Court they made on the 21st of September ordering them to return to the classroom and upon proof of compliance of that order they can file a notice of appeal. We have made a point that there was no appeal before this court. He also said that the court is considering the interest of students who have been locked out of school and the educational infrastructure that has been locked down for the past eight months

NANS appealed to ASUU to obey the court order and let the Federal Government fulfill its part to ASUU so that such a situation won’t repeat itself. They call on Nigerian students to remain calm and be law-abiding as they prepare to back to school soon. He told students to also prepare for the struggle of compensation from the Government that they can not be suffering from the fight between ASUU and the Federal Government without compensation.

In the meantime, speaker of the house of representative Femi Gbajabiamila has made with president Muhammadu Buhari a second time in less than five days over the eight-month long ASUU strike that seems to have defiled all solutions. Femi Gbajabiamila earlier met President Buhari on Tuesday and submitted recommendations reached during the meeting between the representatives of the striking universities lecturers and the leadership of the house of representatives. President Buhari asked for time to consider their suggestions and recommendations before he takes a decision that would likely end the stand-off between the federal government and ASUU

The speaker said Nigerians would hear directly from the president soon after their meeting which he described as very positive.
